What good fortune I have been having lately. That is not to say, it's hasn't been hard work.
On April 22, I was informed that my quilt "Modern Art in Quilt Form" won a second place ribbon at the AQS Show in Paducah. I was sitting at a quilt guild board meeting when a friend texted me to tell me. I screamed in the middle of the meeting. If any group of people were going to understand my excitement, it would be a group of quilters.
I had entered this quilt in the NQA Show in May, where it placed 3rd. It was a bit more nerve recking, watching your "baby" being judged. I will say, I wouldn't normally be to nervous. I already know the flaws. However, this is a new style for me.
Now, for my final bit of good news…let me do a little backtracking. Four years ago I started on my a journey…well I guess it started a little bit before that. I had taken a Introduction to Judging class to learn how to run a judging room for an organization. After taking the class, I thought "I could become a judge". So I filled out the application. Well you have to have experience to get into the program (it's not a training program, it's a certification program). So it took a little bit of time to get the experience, but four years ago I was accepted into the program. Looking back, that was the easy part. Next came, the intensive learning…answering 31 questions may sound like an easy task, but when there are 20 parts to a question it can take a bit of research and time. I have many people say "don't you just take a couple of classes?" Well, no. I have been taking classes, many classes and read many books and articles since I started quilting in 1995, there was still a lot of information that I needed to find. However, after four years of hard work, there has been a successful end to my journey…I am now a NQA Certified Judge!
All that hard work and learning has paid off in both making my quilts, and in judging. I am looking forward to spending some time in my studio now putting that knowledge to use!
