Judging

SELC quilting ribbons
Shortly after I starting quilting, I was asked to help develop a local quilt show. During that show, I was lucky enough to scribe for the judge.  Not only did I learn a lot from the experience, but I began to wonder about the process and what makes a quilt a "winner."  Winning quilts not only have wonderful workmanship, but  employ good design principles.  I have taken a broad range of classes, learned a wide variety of techniques, and appreciate all form of quilting and surface design.

Quilt judging is a study of "good", "better" and "best".  It not only takes knowledge of a variety of techniques, it also takes knowledge design principles.  I see the purpose of quilt judging is to acknowledge accomplishments and encourage quilters. Instead of providing a laundry list of errors, I try to provide the next step or two for the maker to improve their work.  I find judging quilt shows to be a rewarding, and enjoy seeing the wide variety of creations made by quilters. As an active entrant myself, I appreciate judges' comments,  the "pat on the back" for techniques done well, and the considerate mention of an area requiring improvement.

I have judged shows independently and as a member of a team.  I am a member of the National  Association Certified Quilt Judges (NACQJ).  I am also a Regional Representative for SAQA.  For a listing of my exhibitions, please visit my other website: http://www.suecortesequilt.com/contact--information.html

I would love to help your guild or group with judging a show, contest or challenge! Please contact me for availability.
